Academic Expectations You should consider the textbook as your major source for information in this course. Class time will be used for review, discussion, and summary, thus the assigned reading must be done prior to its assigned date. Given the wide range of backgrounds and interests represented in the students in this course, it is your responsibility to request clarification where necessary. Questions: - in class or during office hours. I will emphasize material from the textbook in lectures, explaining concepts and reinforcing what you have learned from reading the text. Section 310.00 in the MSU Conduct Guidelines states that students must: A. be prompt and regular in attending classes; B. be well prepared for classes; C. submit required assignments in a timely manner; D. take exams when scheduled; E. act in a respectful manner toward other students and the instructor and in a way that does not detract from the learning experience; and F. make and keep appointments when necessary to meet with the instructor. In addition to the above items, students are expected to meet any additional course and behavioral standards as defined by the instructor. Collaboration and Plagiarism Teamwork is encouraged in the labs. We will accept work submitted by teams provided that team members number four (4) or fewer, and all names appear on the work. If there is any substantial contribution from another class member, it must be acknowledged. Submission of substantively similar work without attribution is plagiarism, and is subject to class and University disciplinary action (See sections on collaboration and plagiarism below). Teamwork is not allowed during examinations. Collaboration: University policy states that, unless otherwise specified, students may not collaborate on graded material. Any exceptions to this policy will be stated explicitly for individual assignments. If you have any questions about the limits of collaboration, you are expected to ask for clarification. Plagiarism: Paraphrasing or quoting another’s work without citing the source is a form of academic misconduct. Even inadvertent or unintentional misuse or appropriation of another's work (such as relying heavily on source material that is not expressly acknowledged) is considered plagiarism. If you have any questions about using and citing sources, you are expected to ask for clarification.
I-Clicker
The i-Clicker system will be used regularly in class. 4 % of your final grade will be based on participation. You can miss up to 4 classes without penalty. Clickers are available for purchase in the Bookstore. Please bring yours to every class. You cannot get points for showing up without your clicker. "Double clicking" (bringing a friend's clicker to get them points, or sending your clicker with someone else to get points for you) is an academic conduct code violation. Register your clicker on-line (direct link) by going to www.montana.edu > current students > iClicker Registration.
Academic Misconduct Section 420 of the Student Conduct Code describes academic misconduct as including but not limited to plagiarism, cheating, multiple submissions, or facilitating others’ misconduct. Possible sanctions for academic misconduct range from an oral reprimand to expulsion from the university.
Behavioral Expectations Montana State University expects all students to conduct themselves as honest, responsible and law-abiding members of the academic community and to respect the rights of other students, members of the faculty and staff and the public to use, enjoy and participate in the University programs and facilities. For additional information reference see http://www2.montana.edu/policy/student_conduct/student_conductc-code_2006-2007.htm.
